Cindy Yorgason was at the JC Penney in Riverdale when she spotted the man with the rifle, so she got out her camera and snapped a couple of pictures.
“I knew be was trying to make a statement,” Yorgason tells NewsUtah. “He had some t-shirt that also appeared to be making a statement, but I couldn’t read it. He was gone by the time I finished checking out.”
She says in addition to the rifle, the man had a handgun on his right hip and at least one clip on his belt.
One gun advocate says he doesn’t have any issues with the guy carrying a high powered rifle into a store. Jonathan Perry says he thinks carrying a rifle into any place where it’s legal is fine, but the carrier should be willing to deal with some attention.
“As long as he behaves civilly and is not displaying it in a threatening manner,” Perry said.
Yorgason says she knows the man was trying to make a point, but thinks it was inappropriate to bring a high powered rifle into the store.
“In this day and environment, I think he is sending the wrong message,” Yorgason said.
